Resolute Denim: How Yoshiyuki Hayashi Redefined Classic Jeans

Resolute was founded in 2010 by Yoshiyuki Hayashi, a designer with over 30 years of experience, often referred to as the “Denim Emperor.”

He is best known as the founder of DENIME, one of Osaka’s legendary “Five Tigers” of denim. His work, especially his reinterpretation of classics like the Levi’s 66501, earned a strong following among vintage denim enthusiasts. However, after DENIME was acquired by The Real McCoy’s, the brand’s direction shifted, and Hayashi began to feel increasingly restricted in his creative freedom. Eventually, he made the decision to leave.

That didn’t slow him down. In 2010, he launched Resolute, giving long-time fans the chance to once again experience his vision firsthand.

Reconstructing Classic Denim History

The name “Resolute” comes from the Japanese word kizen, meaning determination. It reflects Hayashi’s unwavering commitment to detail, precision, and craftsmanship, an embodiment of true Japanese artisan spirit.

What sets Resolute apart is that it doesn’t chase constant innovation. Instead, it perfects four core models from the very beginning: 710, 711, 712, and 714. Each one is based on a different era of the Levi’s 501, spanning over 40 years of denim history.

Hayashi carefully deconstructed these vintage references, refined them, and rebuilt them with subtle adjustments, especially around the hips and thighs, to better suit Asian body proportions. The result is a fit that feels supported and balanced, avoiding the excess fabric often found in traditional vintage cuts.

To achieve ideal proportions when worn, Resolute offers eight inseam options from L28 to L36. Among them, the 710, based on the 66501, is the brand’s signature. Its clean, slim silhouette works just as well dressed up as it does casually, offering a timeless and mature look.

Made in Japan, Without Compromise

Japanese-made denim has long been respected worldwide for its quality.

At RESOLUTE, every step, from dyeing and weaving to sewing and finishing, is done in Japan. The fabric is produced by Shinya Mills in Okayama, a historic mill that previously worked with DENIME. Using RESOLUTE’s custom vintage power looms, they create a rough, hairy, and deeply vintage-feeling denim fabric.

Sewing and finishing are handled by the Niimi Sewing Center in Okayama, a factory once designated by Levi’s for its early Japan line. Hayashi himself has said: “This is the only factory in the world that can truly make RESOLUTE jeans.”

That level of craftsmanship speaks for itself.

Yoshiyuki Hayashi

Many people assume from his name that Hayashi might be Chinese, but he is very much a passionate Osaka native. He loves water sports and has a deep appreciation for Western classic culture. Born in 1956, Hayashi first fell in love with denim after wearing a pair of Levi’s 66501 in his youth. From that moment on, denim became a lifelong pursuit, and he even dreamed of working for Levi’s. After graduating from Kinki University, he started at the retail level and taught himself how to make jeans from the ground up.

His talent, combined with an obsessive attention to detail, quickly gained recognition. By 1988, he was invited to become the lead designer of DENIME, helping build the brand into one of Japan’s most influential denim names and one of the legendary “Osaka Five.”

After leaving DENIME, Hayashi launched RESOLUTE in 2010 to recreate the kind of denim he had always sought: refined, purposeful, and tailored for real-life wear. He also challenged old conventions, famously stating that “not washing your jeans is outdated,” advocating instead for regular washing to achieve a more natural and even fade.

Hayashi himself is a perfect example of his philosophy. His personal style is simple yet timeless, often just a shirt and jeans. Whether paired with a sweater, a down vest, or layered under a coat in winter, his outfits consistently reflect ease, balance, and understated elegance.

One Pair of RESOLUTE, Dressy or Casual

The cropped, ankle-length style that has been trending since around 2022 can largely be credited to Hayashi himself. It has also become a staple dark blue trouser in more refined wardrobes. The truth is, not every pair of jeans can pull this off, but RESOLUTE can.

Onomichi Denim Project

Hayashi’s passion extends beyond design. He is deeply committed to preserving and evolving denim culture.

In January 2013, he co-launched the first Onomichi Denim Project, an initiative aimed at promoting the denim industry in eastern Hiroshima and the charm of Onomichi itself.

The first project involved 540 pairs of jeans shared among 270 participants. Each person rotated between two pairs weekly, and every pair was crafted with full dedication by RESOLUTE artisans, allowing each wearer to carry Onomichi’s craftsmanship, spirit, and story in their own way.

After one year, the jeans had been shaped by the gentle sea breeze and sunlight of the Onomichi channel. The result was that the same jeans, worn by different people, developed completely different fades full of personality.

Participants in the Onomichi Denim Project ranged from their 20s to 70s, including fishermen, carpenters, farmers, textile workers, priests, daycare teachers, and more.

Each was given two new pairs of jeans with one simple instruction: “Wear these as work pants for one year.” Through real work and daily wear, the jeans developed natural fades full of story and personality, with a texture and fading character that artificial processing simply cannot replicate.

“Made in Japan” craftsmanship is something Japan proudly shares with the world. What has been passed down across generations is not just the form of tradition itself, but the empathy for the user at the heart of Japanese manufacturing, along with the love and passion artisans put into what they make.

RESOLUTE aims to carry forward this spirit of Japanese craftsmanship, embedding it into denim and passing it on through each pair of jeans to people around the world.
