Tanuki Shiramayu Fabric
Shiramayu (白繭 – “White Cocoon”) is a 10 oz fabric made from yarn with a count of 8, resulting in a firm, substantial texture that is relatively heavy for T-shirt material. The fabric undergoes a basic finishing step known as “soaping”, which involves washing to remove machine oils and any residues from the raw yarn used in knitting. No bleaching or dyeing processes are applied. Because of this minimal processing, the fabric retains natural characteristics such as neps (small fiber clumps) and cotton trash. These are typically removed during bleaching in conventional production methods, especially when preparing a base for dyeing in light shades like ivory.
However, by skipping the bleaching process, Shiramayu preserves these visible traits, which reflect the raw state of the cotton. Avoiding bleaching also reduces fiber damage, contributing to the fabric’s durability. In addition, the lack of chemical treatments means the environmental impact of this fabric is comparatively low. The name Shiramayu, meaning “white cocoon” in Japanese, refers to the fabric’s unprocessed and undyed condition. It reflects an intention to maintain the material in its most natural and unaltered form, emphasizing simplicity and a reduced ecological footprint.
