【Brother Bridge】HEMINGWAY BLACK/HORSE BUTT SANDALS
Inspired by the traditional footwear worn by European fishermen, this fisherman sandal features wide woven leather straps that securely wrap around the foot for a supportive, comfortable fit.
Crafted from a single piece of thick, structured leather, the sandal is built on a wide last that allows for a relaxed fit—perfect even when worn with socks. Outfitted with a durable Vibram sole, it’s built to last and made for years of wear.
As summers grow longer each year, BROTHER BRIDGE hopes this pair becomes a staple in your warm-weather wardrobe.
Maryam Horse Butt
The upper is made from “HORSE BUTT” leather, sourced from MARYAM, a premium Italian tannery known for its expertise in horsehide.
Only the densest and most durable part of the hide—the hindquarters—is used, and it is fully vegetable-tanned. Finished with a tea-core structure, the leather develops a deep, beautiful patina over time, offering both strength and character.
Introduction to Fisherman Sandals
Fisherman sandals originated in the Mediterranean region of Europe, traditionally worn by fishermen for their practical blend of protection and breathability. Characterized by closed toes and a woven strap structure, they offer secure coverage while allowing airflow and quick drying—perfect for hot, humid environments. Over time, this functional design has evolved into a timeless summer staple that balances utility with classic style.
Advantages of Horsehide Leather
Horsehide is known for its dense fiber structure and exceptional durability, especially in the rump area—commonly referred to as shell cordovan. This specific part of the hide is highly resilient and stable, making it ideal for prolonged wear and everyday abrasion. Thanks to its high oil content, horsehide develops a natural luster and rich patina over time, with distinctive creases and color variation unique to each pair. Its rarity and the complexity of its tanning process also add to the value and enjoyment of ownership, making it a top-tier choice for those seeking both function and craftsmanship.
What is Tea Core Leather?
“Tea core” refers to a dyeing technique where the surface of the leather is dyed black, while the underlying layer retains a brown, tan, or natural tone. In other words, it looks black on the outside, but it’s brown underneath.
During the tanning and dyeing process, only the surface layer is treated with black dye, preventing full penetration. As the leather creases, scuffs, and wears over time, the brown core gradually reveals itself, creating a striking contrast and a beautiful aged appearance.
This unique finish allows the leather to age with character—where black wears down to brown in high-friction areas, resulting in a layered, broken-in look. Tea core leather not only offers a rugged, vintage vibe, but also showcases the craftsmanship behind the dyeing process. It’s the kind of material that evolves with you, becoming more personal and full of depth the longer you wear it.
