【Raggy Clothing】Leather Sports Jacket
Product Description
Raggy Clothing applies multiple layers of detailed processing to this jacket, all with the intention of achieving a natural, richly layered aging over time.
Constructed from 1.2mm thick Himeji horsehide, the leather is vegetable tanned and finished with a wax treatment. The surface is treated with black dye and paraffin, creating a tea-core leather that gradually develops a subtle, gradient-like fade and texture with wear.
The silhouette is based on the classic A-line shape commonly seen in vintage American garments, reworked for a clean, wearable fit that adapts easily across different styles.
Rooted in timeless essentials and inspired by vintage garments, Raggy Clothing focuses on creating pieces with depth and character. This jacket fully reflects that design philosophy.
Paraffin Infusion Treatment
The horsehide is sourced from Italy and vegetable tanned in Himeji, Japan, preserving the leather’s natural fiber structure and firm hand. A paraffin-based finishing process is then applied, enriching the leather with a softer, more supple feel while enhancing its natural surface depth.
It is then treated with black dye, resulting in a deep, dimensional black tone. With continued wear and friction, the surface color gradually evolves, allowing warmer brown undertones to subtly emerge, creating a layered tea-core patina.
This transformation is not a simple surface wear-off, but a gradual evolution shaped by use. Each jacket develops its own unique color and texture over time.
Features of Aniline-Dyed Horsehide
This jacket is crafted using aniline dyeing (dye finish), a relatively uncommon approach among Japanese leather jackets.
Instead of coating the surface, the dye penetrates into the leather fibers, preserving the hide’s natural grain, fine scars, wrinkles, and organic texture. Each piece carries its own unique character from the start.
Over time, the leather develops a deeper sheen and richer tonal variation. The fading is controlled and subtle, rather than exposing the entire base layer. Compared to high-contrast Japanese styles, it leans toward a more understated, European aesthetic.
Aniline vs. Pigment Dye
Pigment dye creates a uniform layer on the leather surface, often used in Japanese jackets that emphasize strong contrast. It offers a more consistent appearance and higher durability, while over time, wear reveals the underlying color, producing a more pronounced contrast.
Aniline dye, on the other hand, penetrates into the leather fibers, maintaining higher transparency and preserving natural markings. Grain variation, small scars, and tonal differences remain visible, gradually evolving into a softer sheen and more integrated look with wear. Minor surface scratches tend to blend in over time rather than remain as distinct marks.
The difference lies in how the aging is expressed. Pigment dye evolves through surface wear, while aniline dye develops through a gradual deepening of tone and texture across the entire leather.
“I prefer leather with a moist, supple feel, which is why I insist on traditional vegetable tanning, finished with dye and paraffin to preserve the leather’s true character.”
“Each pattern is refined down to the millimeter, balancing a vintage-inspired silhouette with a clean shape and everyday wearability.”
