We are excited to bring back Asphalt Denim, one of ONI DENIM’s most remarkable heavyweight Japanese selvedge fabrics.

Developed by Oishi-san, this 20oz denim takes slub and nep texture to an extraordinary level. The fabric is bold, rough, and highly irregular, with a surface that closely resembles the texture of an asphalt road.

The 266 Asphalt uses ONI’s relaxed straight fit. It offers generous room through the thighs, knees, and calves while maintaining a classic straight-leg silhouette.

ONI Asphalt Denim

Over the course of more than a year, ONI developed a new denim fabric that pushed far beyond the usual limits of textured denim.

Unlike typical heavyweight denim that relies only on ultra-thick yarns and extremely low-tension weaving, Asphalt Denim is crafted with highly irregular slub yarns and a unique weaving formula that creates its exaggerated texture.

These special yarns are twisted specifically for this fabric and woven at ultra-low tension. Combined with deep indigo dye, the result is a rugged, uneven surface with a strong asphalt-like character.

The fabric is filled with striking white cotton neps, created as cotton fibers protrude through the surface during the low-tension weaving process. These neps scatter across the fabric like snowflakes, adding rich visual depth and a highly organic texture.

The original fabric was so heavily nepped that the factory had to carefully remove the most exaggerated neps during inspection to keep the finished product clean and wearable.

Look closely and you will notice that no two sections of the fabric are alike. The irregular yarns create different levels of indigo dye penetration, resulting in dramatic highs and lows of color intensity.

Like most ONI jeans, the fabric feels coarse at first but will gradually soften with wear, becoming more comfortable over time.

One thing to note: Asphalt Denim has more stretch in the weave than usual, so we recommend sizing down one from your regular size. If you do not like your jeans too snug, your true size will also work.

ONI 266 Fit

The ONI 266 is a high-rise relaxed straight fit and one of ONI’s most popular silhouettes.

It offers a roomy fit throughout the upper and lower leg, with a straight cut from the thigh down to the hem.

The relaxed structure gives the jeans a strong vintage presence while allowing the heavy and highly textured Asphalt Denim fabric to drape naturally.

How Much Do "ONI Asphalt" Stretch in waist?

You can expect the waist to stretch by at least 1 inch after the first day to one week of wear. With approximately 20-30 wears, the waist will stretch up to 1.5 inches.
