【Nudie Jeans】Steady Eddie II Dry Ace Selvage
Using modern technology to recreate 70 years of history
The rarity of Dry Ace Selvage is that it recreates an old piece of cloth from the 1950s. This is different from the reuse of old cloth. It requires scientific reverse engineering and analysis of the production, dyeing and structure of the original yarn.
This vintage fabric, originally found at a secondhand market, was severely faded. Now, the original, new jeans are made, giving us a sense of time travel. Nudie is thrilled to bring this vintage fabric to everyone, and we're grateful to Shinya Fabric Mill in Japan for providing the technology. The fabric is a moderately thick 14.2oz, featuring a vintage-grade pink selvedge and an extremely rare indigo-dyed bag pattern, which will fade to a lighter blue over time.
Dry Ace Selvage is a beautifully stiff, 14.2-ounce, red-dyed denim woven by the legendary Shinya Mills in Okayama, Japan. Its warp is dyed with 20 passes of pure indigo, resulting in a deep, pure indigo with a reddish hue. The naturally thick yarns, woven under low tension, create a perfectly thick, three-dimensional, uneven surface structure, giving this fabric that sought-after imperfection within perfection. And for good reason. Shinya Mills, with its exceptional vintage denim craftsmanship, recreated Dry Ace Selvage by analyzing the denim of a distressed pair of vintage jeans from the 1950s. Imagine recreating raw denim from the layers of a worn, washed, and torn pair of vintage jeans—it's reverse engineering!
The unique character of Ace of Spades selvedge stems from its thick, irregular yarns, the extensive use of indigo dye, and its low-tension weaving method. These factors create a highly appealing, rugged, aged effect. Over time, the dye rapidly wears off the yarn surface, emphasizing its vertical fall. When washed, the yarns slightly rearrange, reducing the straight-grained texture and transforming into a vintage, rough-hewn crosshatch pattern with a salt-and-pepper grain. Notably, the indigo yarn's high surface saturation means that upon washing, the dye initially penetrates the white weft yarns, adding depth to the overall color. With repeated washings, the color gradually fades to a brighter blue, while the darker hue remains in the seams and folds, creating a contrasting effect. This unparalleled aging property makes Ace one of the finest Japanese selvedge denims Nudie has ever used.
Now, this is just the beginning of Steady Eddie Dry Ace Selvage. We all love the color and texture of Dry Ace in its dry state—but after wear and washing, it looks even more amazing. Because of its red-dyed coloration, its fading produces a bright blue hue, its uneven structure creates a salt-and-pepper grainy effect, and in the heaviest areas of wear, a noticeable diagonal grain fade occurs. There's no doubt this Ace of Spades denim deserves its name, so without further delay—let's take a look at the mighty Steady Eddie Dry Ace Selvage!
