Yuketen
【Yuketen】Italian Hex Eye Boat Shoe w/ Cortina Sole - Horween Grizzly Brown
The Concept
Yuketen's USA-made moccasin collection is inspired by the rugged footwear worn by the early guides who once trailblazed the untamed wilderness of New England. Their footwear strongly reflected the spirit of an era where European hunting culture and Native American craftsmanship met and beautifully merged.
The flexible, foot-enveloping moccasin design, essential for Native Americans enduring harsh winters and navigating demanding hunting grounds, was masterfully combined with modern Western shoemaking technology, such as engineered lasts, molds, and robust outsoles.
This historic fusion perfectly balanced the second-skin comfort of the moccasin with the uncompromising durability required for the wild. This is how the Yuketen moccasin collection, which proudly inherits the culture and traditions of the good old days of America, came into being. We deeply honor their pioneering spirit and continue to explore the infinite potential of this iconic design.
Design Details
For the adventurer at heart, Yuketen has reimagined the iconic sporting boat shoe with the unmatched quality of our traditional handsewn moccasins. This three-eyelet model is engineered to secure the foot while remaining breathable even in the steamy heat of a midday sail.
The throat is wrapped in a single collar piece, a thoughtful design that avoids the blistering often caused by collar-seam stitching and elegantly conceals the 360-degree rawhide lacing.
Distinctive aesthetic touches, including our signature baseball stitch overcast, pinking decoration on the heel seam, and rugged 1970s-inspired hex eyelets, elevate this traditional boating silhouette into a unique statement of style.
Upper: Horween Chromexcel® Grizzly Leather
For the upper, we have selected the legendary Chromexcel Grizzly leather, meticulously crafted by the historic Horween Leather Company. Utilizing a closely guarded, unique formula that has remained unchanged since 1913, this extraordinary material is the result of a painstaking manufacturing method involving at least 89 separate processes.
The secret to its unmatched character lies in Horween’s masterful "combination tanning" technique. The hides are first chrome-tanned to achieve a remarkable, buttery softness, and then fully re-tanned using a traditional vegetable tanning method to instill rugged toughness and structural resilience.
This perfect harmony of suppleness and strength makes it the absolute ideal material for our genuine hand-sewn moccasin construction.
As a premium pull-up leather, its beautifully oiled surface is highly dynamic. When the leather is stretched, flexed, or folded during wear, the infused oils shift beneath the surface, revealing breathtakingly beautiful lighter tones and a profound depth of color.
Highly reactive to your daily life, it will gracefully absorb the story of your journeys, quickly developing a stunning, individualized patina that only grows richer with time.
Construction: Genuine Moccasin & 1950s American Last
Each pair is handcrafted using Genuine Moccasin Construction, a traditional method where the leather wraps entirely beneath the foot to envelope it like a comfortable, protective sock.
To achieve a superior, molded fit that mirrors the natural shape of the human foot, multiple leather components are hand-sewn and hand-lasted on Yuketen’s proprietary last, a 1950s design celebrated as the definitive last for the perfect American moccasin.
Insole & Outsole Comfort System
The interior features a highly breathable, full vegetable-tanned leather insole that keeps your feet fresh and naturally molds to the unique contours of your foot over time. Sandwiched directly beneath this insole is a layer of memory foam for optimal, adaptive cushioning. This rests upon a robust leather tuck, a premium structural component traditionally reserved for Goodyear-welted footwear.
This firm foundation not only provides exceptional heel and arch support to prevent the foot from sinking too deeply, but crucially, it ensures the shoe bends precisely at the foot's natural flex point. This thoughtful architecture promotes a smooth, anatomically correct stride, significantly reducing fatigue during extended wear.
The foundation is the Italian-made, soft-compound Cortina lug sole, complementing nine dense layers of rubber and leather underfoot. Originally created to commemorate the 1956 Winter Olympics in Italy’s Cortina district, this sole was designed for the ultimate balance of grip and durability, maintaining peak performance and stability even in the most challenging environments.
In a beautiful fusion of Italian history and American heritage, the rubber is uniquely infused with cork chips, paying homage to the rugged outsoles of 1930s American work boots. This thoughtful detail adds a beautiful vintage character and a distinct aesthetic appeal to every step.
