Momotaro Jeans: A New Standard, Evolved

A Response to Contemporary Denim

After years of focusing on fabric development and denim craftsmanship, Momotaro Jeans’ vision for jeans is no longer limited to recreating a vintage aesthetic.

When a brand has fully mastered traditional techniques, dyeing methods, and weaving structures—while gaining access to rare resources and expanding its way of thinking—it becomes possible to ask a new question: can denim still evolve?

The Standard series was born from this exact line of thought.

Moving Forward from Tradition

Evolution does not mean making a radical or attention-seeking statement. Instead, it is about expressing traditional values through a different design language.

Unlike many Japanese denim brands that continue to look backward, Momotaro Jeans chose to move forward—building upon vintage shuttle looms and classic denim foundations while exploring a path that had yet to be taken.

This is not a rejection of tradition. On the contrary, it is precisely because the techniques are fully understood that they can be transformed.

As the first release following the brand’s renewed identity, the Standard series fully embodies Momotaro Jeans’ vision of contemporary denim.

The Change Brought by TOKUNO

The fabric feels smooth to the touch with reduced roughness, yet it retains a refined and dimensional denim texture—while continuing the brand’s signature TOKUNO deep indigo expression.

Under shifting light, the depth of the indigo layers becomes clearly visible, along with a subtle sheen created by the high-density warp yarns.

Refinement, Not Simplification

A closer look reveals that the Standard series is not about simplification, but about carefully reorganizing every detail that truly affects the wearing experience.

An enlarged coin pocket improves usability; understated hidden rivets create a cleaner exterior; and a tailored-style waistband construction—commonly found in dress trousers—reduces friction and color transfer when tucking in a shirt.

These choices may be uncommon in traditional Japanese jeans, but they align closely with real-world wear.

From slimmer silhouettes to wide straight cuts, the Standard series offers a range of fits—allowing different body types and wearing habits to find a shape suitable for everyday life.

Zimbabwe Cotton and Long-Term Wear Comfort

The Standard series continues to use Zimbabwe cotton, while increasing warp and weft density to create a more concentrated and saturated indigo appearance.

The weft yarns that come into direct contact with the skin are specially adjusted, significantly improving comfort during extended wear.

Most importantly, the denim still retains the fading potential expected of raw denim. Over time and with wear, it will develop clear, high-contrast aging—just as we have come to appreciate.

Honoring Tradition While Embracing the Present

The Standard series is not meant to overturn classic Japanese denim. Instead, it seeks to redefine what kind of denim is truly suited for long-term, everyday wear—while respecting tradition.

It takes on the difficult yet necessary role of bridging heritage and modernity, becoming Momotaro Jeans’ clearest and most honest statement within the context of contemporary denim.
