Momotao Jeans :Why Classic?

The Weight of “Classic”

The word “Classic” carries a certain weight in itself—especially in the world of denim, a field shaped deeply by history.

A true classic is not defined by simply recreating the look of a particular era. It establishes a language of its own—one that cannot be easily replaced, no matter how trends evolve. It continues to exist, to be worn, and to be remembered.

Over the past two decades, MOMOTARO JEANS has built a strong and unmistakable reputation worldwide through deeply indigo-dyed fabrics with a rugged hand feel, paired with its iconic white battle stripes. That legacy is now carried forward by the “Classic” series—continuing the story that began in Okayama, much like the enduring legend of Momotaro itself.

A Fabric That Transcends Time

The Classic series is constructed with 15.7oz denim, shaping the unmistakable silhouette of vintage blue jeans, while continuing to use Zimbabwe cotton as its foundation. The signature Tokuno indigo reveals strong vertical fading contrasts over time, working in harmony with the iconic white stripes to express MOMOTARO JEANS’ understanding of denim at its core. While firmly rooted in tradition, Classic is not a simple reproduction of the past—it is a considered evolution, designed to endure.

Classic vs. Standard: Same Origin, Different Paths

Unlike the Standard series, which adopts a tighter warp density for a more refined appearance, the Classic series preserves the yarn configuration and texture used in MOMOTARO JEANS’ earlier years.

Even visually, the fabric’s uneven, rugged surface is immediately apparent. Traditional stamped brass rivets are used, and at points of pressure and abrasion, the cotton fibers naturally burst through, creating a raw and expressive character. The signature stripes on the right back pocket will fade and wear alongside the denim itself, gradually becoming a personal mark unique to the wearer.

The Two White Stripes: More Than Decoration

For MOMOTARO JEANS, the two white stripes have always been one of the most defining elements in the brand’s history.

Inspired by the flags carried by Momotaro and his companions as they set out for battle in the Okayama folklore, early striped models were referred to as “Shutsujin”—a term meaning to march out with resolve. It represents the moment when craftsmen commit their lifetime of skill and knowledge, pushing their craft to its fullest expression.

Why Classic Was Preserved

Following the brand’s restructuring, MOMOTARO JEANS made a deliberate decision to retain this tradition under the name Classic. More than preservation alone, the proportions of the stripes were refined and softened with a subtle grey tone, creating a calmer, more balanced appearance. In doing so, this symbolic detail was given a deeper, more mature significance—one that reflects both heritage and continuity.
